Homegrown talent will take the stage Nov. 22 for the second of Community Concert Association’s 2008-09 productions. The David Johnson Chorus and the University Singers from the University of Tennessee at Martin will create holiday magic beginning at 7:30 p.m. (See related photos Page 12.) “Come Celebrate Christmas” will be the theme for the DJC, a group that came together originally to build on fond musical memories from their high school chorus days and has developed into an outstanding vocal group that has appeared in numerous venues. The chorus’ selections will include everything from madrigals, to holiday standards from the ’30s and ’40s to jazz to Negro spirituals. The University Singers, composed of music majors and those who are minoring in the subject, as well as interested and talented singers in other academic disciplines, will showcase music from classical choral literature, including music from all major historical periods. The chorus performs multiple times each semester and has toured across the state, in the southeastern region of the U.S., in the West and at the famous Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Calif. Membership in Community Concerts is still open and those purchasing the packages will be able to enjoy not only upcoming local programs featuring the Dukes of Dixieland, The Tennessee Men’s Chorale (to be staged at Union City First Baptist Church) and the Jackson Symphony, but also a surprise visit from an internationally-known guest. With the exception of the Tennessee Men’s Chorale performance, all other local shows will be at Union City Civic Auditorium. They can also take part in performances in Dyersburg that include UTM Steel Drum Ensemble (Nov. 16 at 3 p.m.), The Three Irish Tenors (Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m.), Ohio Brass (March 3 at 7:30 p.m.) and “Bye Bye Birdie” (April 16 at 7:30 p.m.) All Dyersburg performances will be at Yates Auditorium at the Professional Development Center. Membership tickets will be on sale at the door of Union City Civic Auditorium Nov. 22 on a first-come, first-served basis. Family membership tickets are $95, with adult membership at $45, senior membership at $40 and student membership at $25.
