There is still time to enter The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa’s 16th annual National Gingerbread House Competition and win the grand prize of $3,000 in cash plus a two-night club floor package including two nights’ accommodations, dinner for two and breakfast each morning. Deadline to enter is Nov. 10; entry forms are available at www.groveparkinn.com.

The National Gingerbread House Competition attracts over 300 entries from 20 states. It is comprised of four categories: Adult (18 and older), Teen (13-17), Youth (9-12) and Child (8 and younger). Entries are judged on the following criteria: Overall appearance, originality/creativity, difficulty, precision and consistency of theme. Except for the base the entries must be constructed of completely edible materials and be no larger than two feet wide, two feet long and two feet high.

“You hear of the incredible planning the contestants go through in order to create literal works of art,” said Jay Winer, director of public relations & community affairs at the resort. “The degree of involvement and excitement is amazing. It’s truly an event for the individual competitor as well as the entire family.”

More than $12,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded and all contestants will receive a personalized certificate featuring a photograph of their entry.

This year’s event will be held in the grand ballroom, located in the Vanderbilt wing of the resort. Contestants may deliver their houses to the ballroom on Nov. 16 from noon until 7 p.m. and on Nov. 17 from 7-9 a.m. Judging will begin promptly at 10, followed by the awards ceremony at 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The entries will be on display at The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa from Nov. 19 through Jan. 11, 2009. The displays will be open for community viewing Monday through Thursday. Resort guests and those dining in the resort’s restaurants or enjoying the lounges are invited to view the displays at any time. Twenty-five entries will be chosen to receive the honor of being displayed at The Grove Arcade in downtown Asheville. All displays are free and open to the public.
