|With one final chance to break into the win column and snap a losing streak that dates all the way back to early in the 2007 season, the Dresden Lions were unable to bring an end to their frustrating skid. |
The host Jackson Christian School Eagles (5-5, 4-3 Region 8-2A), needing a win to earn a place in the postseason, took advantage of Dresden turnovers en route to a 43-0 victory over the Lions (0-10, 0-7 Region 8-2A) Friday evening in Jackson.
With the victory, the Eagles earned a fourth-place finish in Region 8-2A and a wild card berth in the TSSAA Class AA playoffs. For their Round 1 contest, JCS will travel to Memphis to take on the top team from Region 9-2A, the George Washing Carver Cobras.
A fumbled handoff by the Lions ended their first drive and set up Jackson Christian at its own 41-yard line.
Eagle quarterback Cody Jones connected with Logan Perkins for a 34-yard completion and a 21-yard touchdown toss to Zach Parker on the five-play, 59-yard scoring drive. Nathan Powell’s PAT gave JCS a 7-0 lead with 7:32 left in the first quarter.
Again the Lions gave the ball away, this time when Heath Thompson picked off a pass.
An illegal block by JCS on the interception runback negated a touchdown, but the Eagles got the score on their first snap, a 29-yard run by Will Johnson. Powell’s kick boosted the Eagle lead to 14-0 with 5:35 remaining in the first quarter.
The Lions picked up a first down on three consecutive runs by Zach Garner. The senior running back finished the game with 105 yards on 20 carries.
A holding penalty slowed the drive and led to a Lion punt, but the Eagle returner fumbled the kick and Zach Jolley recovered the ball for the Lions at their own 45-yard line.
Dresden’s momentum was short-lived as a first-down pass was picked off by Spencer Perkins and returned to the Dresden 3. A Lion face mask infraction moved the ball half the distance to the 1-yard line.
On the first JCS snap, Johnson ran the ball over the goal line for a 21-0 Eagle lead.
The Lions were undeterred and rallied together for their best drive of the half. Starting at their own 8, the Lions mixed runs by Garner with keeper runs by quarterback Isaac Butler to move all the way to the JCS 11. On third-and-inches from there, Dresden fumbled the ball away and squandered its best scoring chance of the game.
Dresden’s defense then forced the Eagles to punt after a three-and-out series.
A holding penalty against the Lions forced them into a long-yardage situation. Butler was limited to 2 yards on fourth-and-three at the Eagle 43.
JCS overcame a holding penalty on its ensuing drive. A Jones-to-Perkins pass covering 42 yards was the big play. Johnson covered the final 6 yards on a TD run. Perkins caught a pass from Noah Chandler to convert the two-pointer for a 29-0 Eagle halftime lead.
JCS scored on the first drive of the third quarter with a 33-yard Jones-to-Perkins scoring strike. Powell’s kick lifted the lead to 36-0 and set the clock in perpetual motion via the TSSAA’s mercy rule.
The last Eagle score of the game came on a 13-yard run by Johnson and a Powell kick with 3:18 left in the third quarter.
The loss marked the final performance on the high school gridiron by five Lion seniors — Zach Garner, Dylan Nanney, Brandon Pittman, Hunter Robinson and Ben Huestis.
