A driver and passenger were both charged with a drug-related offense following a traffic stop by police Sunday evening on East Main Street in Union City.
Nico Devin Jones, 20, of 1110 Tucker Circle, Dyersburg, identified as the driver, was charged with simple possession of marijuana, while Perry Lynn Powell, 24, of 415 North Grayson St., Trimble, identified as his passenger, was charged with two counts of simple possession of marijuana, according to Union City Police Department reports.
They were arrested at 5:43 p.m. in the 1500 block of East Main Street after police had initially stopped a vehicle for an alleged window tint violation. An officer reported he made contact with the driver and noticed there was a case of beer in the floorboard of the car that appeared to be open, as well as several open bottles of beer in the car.
After talking with the driver, police recovered one marijuana blunt from under the front seat. The passenger allegedly told police he’d had it in his possession when an officer turned on his blue lights and that he’d gotten scared and must have dropped it, according to the reports.
Police also recovered a small clear baggy of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana from under the driver’s seat. In addition, police reported Powell was found to have $629 folded in bundles of stacked $20 bills, which was seized.
Both men were also issued barred citations for East Gate Village Apartments and Union City Housing Authority properties, according to the reports.
At the Obion County Law Enforcement Complex, Powell allegedly reached into one of his shoes or socks and handed police a small bag of marijuana, resulting in the second drug-related charge, police reported.
