|Skyhawks jump into first place in OVC standings |
The University of Tennessee at Martin has moved into first place in the Ohio Valley Conference football standings with a league record of 5-1 and an overall record of 7-2.
The Skyhawks defeated No. 20 Jacksonville State, 31-30, Thursday night in front of a national television audience on ESPNU. The win combined with Tennessee State’s overtime loss to Southeast Missouri State Saturday helped the Skyhawks make the move into first place.
Tennessee State and Eastern Kentucky round out the top three teams in the OVC. All three teams have one loss this season.
“We control our own destiny,” said Jason Simpson, UT Martin’s third-year head coach.
The Skyhawks will not play this week.
The team returns to action Nov. 8 at Auburn. The Skyhawks will also travel to Cape Girardeau, Mo., for a game against Southeast Missouri State Nov. 15. The Skyhawks will close out the season at home, Nov. 22, against Eastern Kentucky.
UTM football team cracks FCS Coaches and Sports Network Top 25 polls
The University of Tennessee at Martin football team is ranked No. 23 in the nation in this week’s FCS Coaches Poll. The Skyhawks, 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference, defeated Jacksonville State, 31-30, this past Thursday night in a game televised nationally on ESPNU.
Top-ranked James Madison received 27 of the 28 first-place votes this week to remain on top of the FCS Coaches Poll. Nine teams remained in the top 10 from last week’s poll with one team moving into the top 10.
The Skyhawks jumped into The Sports Network FCS Top 25 poll at No. 24. The poll was released Monday afternoon.
James Madison defeated Villanova, 23-19, to hang on to the top spot in The Sports Network weekly poll. Tennessee State, ranked No. 25, is the only other OVC team in the poll.
