Lions no match for undefeated Milan

Lions no match for undefeated Milan
When the Dresden Lions played host to the visiting Milan Bulldogs on Friday nights, both teams entered the contest with a zero in their overall season records.
For the undefeated Bulldogs, it was a zero in the loss column. For the winless Dresden team, the zero was a glaring presence in its win column.
When the final horn sounded at Rotary Field, the zeroes remained as Milan took a 56-6 victory back to Gibson County.
Milan (9-0, 6-0 Region 8-2A) will have a chance to finish the regular season undefeated when it plays host to the Westview Chargers this Friday night, while the Lions’ last chance for a victory in the 2008 season will come at the home field of the Jackson Christian School Eagles. Both games will kick off at 7:30 on Friday night.
Milan entered the game as the state’s No. 2 ranked team in the Associated Press’ statewide Class 2A poll. Their play on the field didn’t do anything to lower the ranking.
The Bulldog defense forced five turnovers and returned two of their four interceptions for touchdowns. Milan’s special teams also added a score on a 75-yard punt return.
Dresden’s lone score came on a 21-yard fumble return by freshman Colin Kanehl in the fourth quarter.
After the opening kickoff, the Milan defense forced a punt after the Lions didn’t gain 10 yards.
Talented Milan running back Jobronski Gilbert picked up two first downs on runs of 10 and 18 yards before former Dresden Lion football player and current Milan starting quarterback Justin Coleman hooked up with Tristian Peoples for a 13-yard completion down to the Lion 1-yard line. Gilbert scored the first touchdown of the night on a push through the left side. Ricky Moody, who was perfect on all of his extra point kicks, booted the PAT for a 7-0 lead with just over eight minutes left in the first quarter.
Dresden again failed to pick up a first down and punted, but the Lion defense, after allowing a Coleman 19-yard completion to J.W. Williams, forced back-to-back incompletions on third and fourth downs.
On another DHS third down play, quarterback Dale Hutcherson was picked off by Williams who returned the interception 50 yards to double the Bulldog lead to 14-0 with 3:08 to play in the first quarter.
The next DHS drive also ended in an interception on the third snap with Williams again doing the honors to give the Bulldogs the ball at the Lion 35.
Two plays later, Gilbert ran 28 yards to paydirt to boost the Milan lead to 21-0 with 19 ticks left in the first frame.
With QB Isaac Butler running the ball on keepers and handing off to Zach Garner, Dresden picked up three first downs and moved across midfield to the Milan 49 before being forced to punt. The Bulldogs nearly blocked the punt, but got an even better result when Tim Adkisson returned the punt 75 yards for the score and a 28-0 advantage with 6:28 left in the first half.
A Lion incompletion on fourth down gave Milan the ball at the DHS 44. Gilbert ran 37 yards before Coleman hit Peoples for a 7-yard TD toss and a 35-0 lead for the final points in the half.
Williams’ 40-yard kick return set up Adkisson’s 35-yard TD run on the first snap of the third quarter for a 42-0 lead.
After the Lions gave the ball up on downs, the Bulldogs, who cleared the bench in the second half, got a 40-yard touchdown run from Trey Milan to extend the lead to 49-0.
After the kickoff Zach Denton picked off another DHS pass and returned it 30 yards for the final Milan TD.
