|The Greenfield Yellowjackets scored more points in the second quarter of their 54-20 victory over the visiting Bruceton Tigers than they had in any of their previous eight games.
The 27 points, part of a 41-0 halftime lead, came via a Greenfield ground attack that amassed a total of 373 rushing yards in the game thanks to two backs with 100-plus yard efforts — Chase McMullen and Steven Sawyers — and a 95-yard night from Tyler Dunning.
In a game with huge playoff implications, Greenfield will next play at Lake County on Thursday night, while the Tigers will visit West Carroll on Friday evening.
Greenfield got off to a hot start when Sawyers returned the opening kickoff 86 yards to paydirt, but a penalty negated the great return and soon after the Tiger defense forced a punt. The Jacket defenders returned the favor with a forced punt. Daniel Ricketts had another exciting GHS kick return to the BHS 7 negated by a penalty.
Starting at the Tiger 30 instead, Greenfield picked up a first down before the Tigers stiffened and forced a fourth down at the 15. Quarterback Ty Smithson found Ricketts open to convert not only the first down but cover the full 15 yards for the game’s first score. The two-point run failed leaving the GHS lead at 6-0 with 6:19 left in the first.
The Greenfield defense again held firm and forced the second of five consecutive three-and-out series by Bruceton.
A Ricketts catch set up McMullen’s only TD of the night, a 30-yard rumble. Smithson ran in the two-pointer for a 14-0 lead with 2:42 still on the clock in the first quarter.
Dunning took charge in the next Jacket drive and capped the scoring march with a 23-yard run to paydirt. He also added the two-pointer for a 22-0 lead within the first two minutes of the second quarter.
It appeared the Tigers might hold Greenfield at bay on their next drive, but on a fourth down play, Smithson kept the ball and eventually raced 35 yards for the score. The two-point pass fell incomplete leaving the Greenfield lead at 28-0 with 7:48 left in the fist half.
Again Dunning did the damage with a 51-yard run to set up his own 13-yard romp over the goal line. Tyler Jones booted the extra point kick for a 35-0 lead.
Bruceton then finally managed a first down but still punted.
Dunning scored his third TD of the second quarter on a 21-yard run followed by a failed kick to leave the halftime score at 41-0 in Greenfield’s favor.
In the third quarter, the teams traded punts before Bruceton finally scored on a 4-yard Ryan Ernsberger run. Hayden Howell passed to Adam Douglas for the two-pointer to trim the GHS lead to 41-8 with 1:40 left in the third quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter, Sawyers got in on the scoring with a 39-yard TD run. A missed kick set the score at 47-8.
Bruceton answered with another Ernsberger scoring run covering 10 yards, but the two-point run failed.
Greenfield got its final touchdown on the night when Sawyers broke into the clear and raced 60 yards to the end zone. Jones again split the uprights for a 54-14 Jacket lead with 2:59 left to play in the game.
The Tigers got one more score in the game’s final minute when Howell hit Chandler Jordan for a 32-yard touchdown toss.
