NASHVILLE (AP) — The second presidential debate, which drew the most TV viewers of this year’s three such events, has boosted the profile of the host, Belmont University, officials at the small Christian school said Wednesday. Citing media tracker NewsPowerOnline.com, university officials said the broadcast coverage was worth an estimated $21 million of publicity for Belmont. The official Belmont debate Web site was visited 30,000 times on debate day alone and more than 100,000 times since its launch in May. In addition, the university’s Web site saw a 42 percent increase in visitors from Oct. 1-16, compared to the same time period last year, and the number of page views nearly doubled. The debate was watched in 63.2 million homes, besting the first debate by more than 10 million homes. The final presidential debate, held Oct. 15, was viewed in 56.5 million homes, according to Nielsen Media Research. The smallest university to host a presidential or vice presidential debate this year, Belmont has a fall enrollment of 5,023 students. “The public perception and reputation of Belmont has risen to a new level, and now the world knows the kinds of things to expect from Belmont University,” said university president Bob Fisher. He said the benefits to the university of hosting the debate will be “both immediate and long-lasting.” More than 2,000 people came to campus the day of the debate for the school’s Block Party and to be a part of live tapings for television news shows.
