The Weakley County Retired Teachers Association held its quarterly meeting at Brandy’s in Martin on Sept. 24. President Jerry Simmons welcomed 23 members and two guests to the fall meeting. The president called the meeting to order and asked for the minutes and treasurer’s report. Secretary Sarah Willingham read the minutes, which were approved; and treasurer Betty Cannon gave the treasurer’s report, which was approved. Old and new business were conducted, and the membership voted to send a donation to Santa’s Helpers. The president introduced Tony Terrell from Gleason, who brought a complimentary and wise devotional using the acronym TEACHER. Bro. Tony is pastor at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Dresden, where members Bettie Higgs and Wanda Powell attend church. Mike Barker, who is on the TRTA Legislative Committee, brought an informative program about identity theft. A short video gave insight into “fighting back against identity theft.” Mr. Barker spoke to and provided a pamphlet that gave three steps to avoid theft: “DETER identity thieves by safeguarding your information, DETECT suspicious activity by routinely monitoring your financial accounts and billing statements, and DEFEND against ID theft as soon as you suspect.” Immediate steps to defend ID theft follow: 1) Place a “Fraud Alert” on your credit reports, 2) Close accounts, 3) File a police report, and 4) Report the theft to the Federal Trade Commission. Some WCRTA members, who had experienced ID theft, shared with the group. Door prizes were provided by September hosts: Doris Lee, Larry Myrick, Mary Myrick, Lou Ann Powers, Carol Murphy, Louise Murphy and Wanda Powell. The Christmas meeting will be held Dec. 10. All members are encouraged to be present, and WCRTA wants and needs the participation of retired teachers throughout Weakley County. Retired teachers are welcome to visit a meeting to learn of our purposes and work.wcp 10-21-08
