|Using a bit of trickery, Dale Hutcherson flipped the ball back to Dylan Nanney on a faked extra point try to complete a two-point conversion and add to Zach Garner’s 6-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, but the points only served to end a scoreless night for the Dresden Lions as Humboldt put the contest out of reach early and cruised on to win 48-8 this past Friday night in Humboldt. |
In the first quarter, Dresden received the kickoff to start the frame and was quickly forced to punt after a three-and-out. The Vikings took over and needed only two plays before they were able to find the end zone on a 35-yard run from Quan Campbell. Luke Wilson added the extra point and Humboldt took a 7-0 lead at the 9:38 mark in the opening quarter.
The Lions’ next series produced another three-and-out and Humboldt regained possession on its own 42-yard line. Both teams traded penalties before Campbell used a 28-yard run to race into Lion territory. Campbell ran another 7 yards on first down prior to a 14-yard pass from Darren Dunbar to James Harrison moving the Vikes down to the 3-yard line before Campbell ran in the TD. The kick failed, but with 3:03 left in the first quarter, the Humboldt lead increased to 13-0.
Dresden got the ball back and netted 4 yards on the ground before being forced to punt to end the first quarter.
To open the second quarter, Campbell carried the ball 2 yards and Dunbar picked up 16 yards and a first down. Fumbling the snap, Dunbar lost 6, but made up for it on the next play by going long to Campbell through the air for the 62-yard touchdown connection. Wilson added the kick and the Vikings led 20-0 with 10:07 left before the half.
The Lions picked up 4 yards on a Garner carry and a yard from Zach Jolley before Jolley was met in the backfield by a host of Viking defenders and the visitors were forced to punt.
Getting the ball back on their own 28-yard line, the Vikings were stopped for no gain on first down, but Campbell swept around the defense for a 72-yard touchdown run. Wilson’s kick made the score 27-0 in favor of the Vikings with 6:59 left in the second quarter.
The Lions picked up a yard on first down from Garner, but Jackie Dean was stopped for no gain on second down. On third-and-long, Hutcherson’s pass was tipped, intercepted and returned 54 yards the other way for a score by Jacoby Thompson. Wilson kicked the extra point and put the Vikes up 34-0 with 4:56 left in the first half.
That same score remained on the board as the teams headed into the locker rooms for the intermission.
In the third quarter, the Vikings opened by facing their first fourth-down situation of the game. They assembled into punt formation, but faked the kick and the punter, Joey Blankenship, ran 16 yards and collected the first down. Humboldt continued to eat up the clock and gain short ground yardage and Cleve Davis ran in the 1-yard touchdown. Wilson’s kick made the score 41-0 with 5:45 left in the third.
The Vikings scored their final touchdown of the contest on a 5-yard run from Rodney Nance, but Dresden ended its scoreless night when Garner broke free of Viking defenders and ran six yards for the touchdown. Nanney ran in the conversion on the trick play and made the final score 48-8 in favor of the Vikes.
Campbell led the visitors with three rushing touchdowns, one receiving touchdown and 208 all-purpose yards. Garner had 69 rushing yards and a touchdown for Dresden.
The Lions will next host Milan and Humboldt will travel to play Westview. Both games will kick off at 7:30 Friday night.
