DUBLIN, Ohio — (Oct. 15, 2008) Masayuki Miyajima – New Works, opens Nov. 11 at Dublin Arts Council (DAC), 7125 Riverside Dr., in Dublin, Ohio. The ceramics exhibition by Japanese artist Masayuki Miyajima remains on view through Dec. 19. An opening reception for the artist, who will travel to Dublin from the town of Motegi, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, will be held on Wed., Nov. 12 from 6 to 8 pm at Dublin Arts Council. The exhibition and the reception are free of charge and the public is invited to attend. Masayuki Miyajima’s work is steeped in a long history of Japanese ceramics, where elegant, functional, handmade pottery is intrinsic to daily life. Through his apprenticeship with “Living National Treasure” Shimaoka Tatsuzo, Mayajima’s work is deeply tied to the Mingei folk art tradition, preserving the value and inherent simplistic beauty of the pottery of Mashiko, the area known for its Mingei ware. Miyajima’s studio and kiln are situated just outside of Mashiko, where he has explored shape and material since 1987 to produce work relevant to current, daily needs. Over the past few years, he has sought new ways of using traditional materials to create new form, surface, texture and glaze. Miyajima participates in yearly group exhibitions with Tatsuzo and his apprentices. Internationally, he has shown and sold his work in New York and Los Angeles and has participated in a teaching residency through the Visiting East Asian Professionals Program at Washington University in St. Louis. “This exhibition is important to the community because it celebrates Dublin’s diversity and highlights the international reach of Dublin Arts Council’s programs and offerings,” explains DAC Executive Director David S. Guion, Ph.D. Miyajima’s visit will be highlighted by several opportunities to meet the artist at Dublin Arts Council: Sat. Nov. 15, 10am-6pm and Sun., Nov. 16, 12-4pm; Sat. Nov. 22, 10am-6pm and Sun., Nov. 23, 12-4pm. In addition to these special events, the exhibition will be on view Tues., 10am-7pm; Wed. thru Fri., 10am–5pm; and Sat., 11am-2pm. The exhibition is underwritten by Dublin-based Hidaka USA, Inc., and the Dublin Foundation.
