CULVER CITY, Calif. (AP) — Lauren Conrad’s biggest fans are the MTV-loving teen and tween set, and her second collection of basic, girly dresses — while sometimes haphazardly executed — will probably suit them well. Conrad, the star of MTV reality show “The Hills,” showed 41 simple looks last week at a packed show at Mercedes-Benz Los Angeles Fashion Week. In the audience were a smattering of celebrities, including Lauren “Lo” Bosworth and Jason Wahler from “The Hills;” Hugh Hefner’s platinum-haired ex Holly Madison; and singer Gavin DeGraw. Conrad’s designs ranged from strapless floor-length dresses in muted white, blue and brown to high-waisted shorts and thigh-skimming flowered dresses with bubble skirts — some with bits of tulle awkwardly exposed. Overgrown fake flowers similar to those worn by Carrie Bradshaw in “Sex and the City” adorned headbands, completing Conrad’s overarching feminine theme. Thick black and brown belts cinched dresses in at the waist. But not everything was so fitted: One model had to pull up her loose-fitting strapless dress to keep it from falling into “wardrobe malfunction” territory. Conrad, who has trained at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, was definitely ambitious in extending her collection beyond the 30 looks she did for March (when many more of her “Hills” and “Laguna Beach” castmates turned out). The collection’s best pieces touched upon her retro sensibility. A lemon-colored chiffon halter dress had a nice, Hollywood poolside feel, and a flowing white tunic with long bell sleeves displayed ’70s flair. A black ruched swimsuit with a sweetheart neckline had a cute ’50s flavor. Published in The Messenger 10.20.08
