NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development says unemployment in the state rose last month to the highest level in more than 21 years. Tennessee’s unemployment rate for September was 7.2 percent, up 2.3 percent from 4.9 percent a year ago. State records show Tennessee’s rate was the highest since March 1987 and was 1.1 percent above the comparable U.S. rate for September. Tennessee Labor Commissioner James Neeley said Thursday that the nation’s economic downturn is affecting all states. ——— Information from: Chattanooga Times Free Press, http://www.timesfreepress.com Published in The Messenger 10.17.08
