|COOKEVILLE — The University of Tennessee at Martin defense held host Tennessee Tech to 171 total yards of offense and took advantage of four Tennessee Tech turnovers en route to a 35-7 victory over the host Golden Eagles Thursday night. |
The Skyhawks improved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference standings. UTM also claimed its second win of the season in the Sgt. York Challenge series. Tennessee Tech falls to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the OVC.
Junior safety Dontrell Miller had an interception, his fourth of the season, and a 60-yard fumble return for his fifth defensive touchdown of the 2008 campaign.
Junior running back Brandyn Young scored two first-half touchdowns and rushed for 107 yards on 21 carries.
Skyhawk quarterback Cade Thompson completed 10-of-21 passes for 175 yards. He threw two touchdown passes in the contest.
Thompson connected with junior Roren Thomas for an 82-yard touchdown. He also hooked up with Mike Hicks for a 25-yard score.
The Skyhawk defense gave up 97 passing yards and 74 rushing yards. The lone Tennessee Tech touchdown came in the first quarter when Henry Sailes returned a kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 7-all.
UT Martin will return to action and Skyhawk Stadium next Thursday with a critical OVC matchup against preseason league favorite Jacksonville State.
That game will be broadcast on ESPNU throughout the nation and it will feature former LSU quarterback Ryan Perriloux.
Perriloux, who was instrumental in the Tigers’ victory over Tennessee in last year’s Southeastern Conference championship game was booted from the LSU team in May and he then transferred to Jacksonville State. He is presently the Gamecocks’ starting quarterback.
