On Thursday, Sept. 11, Mrs. Gladys Simmons, Mrs. Jerry Seamans, Mrs. Hycinth Smith and Mrs. Martha Lamb attended the AARP Regional Impact Team meeting in Huntingdon. Mrs. Simmons was presented the Runner Up Regional Anarus Award for her volunteer work in the community. Each of the four AARP chapters in our region shared ideas and suggestions for community projects and to increase interest in the meetings. We were given an update on the Divided We Fail campaign as well as other reports. On Wednesday, Sept. 17, our chapter met in the fellowship hall of the First United Methodist Church in Martin. Activities began at 9:30 a.m. with a time of fellowship and refreshments. Hostesses were Mrs. Dorothy Coleman and Mrs. Gladys Hailey. At 10 a.m. chapter President Simmons called the meeting to order and read an article about grandparents in honor of Grandparents’ Day. After prayer requests were voiced, Marshall Hazelwood led in prayer. We said the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. flag. The minutes of the August meeting were read and the financial report was given. Donations to the Weakley County Rescue Squad were accepted, which treasurer Jerry Seamans delivered. The Nominating Committee chairperson, Marshall Hazelwood, presented the recommendations for chapter officers for 2009. We will vote on this at the October meeting. Woodrow Collier introduced West Tennessee Farm Bureau regional field director Hugh Adams who spoke about farming in the area and the involvement of Farm Bureau program to help children learn where food comes from. The speaker for our Oct. 15 chapter meeting will be Gary Roberts who is the song leader at Stanley Chapel church. Mrs. Jean Bradberry and Mrs. Sarah Hazelwood volunteered to be hostesses. We invite you to attend our chapter meetings where we learn more about important issues and matters of interest in the community. wcp 10-14-08
