A Graves County, Ky., man was arrested on drug-related charges Tuesday in Hickman, Ky., during an incident which resulted in a roadway being closed for several hours due to a possible hazardous device.
Danny Cathey, 53, was arrested and charged with trafficking in a controlled substance, 1st degree; possession of a controlled substance, 3rd degree; illegal sale/possession/distribution of a legend drug; and improper registration, according to a press release from the Kentucky State Police.
The arrest stemmed from a traffic stop Tuesday afternoon at KY 94 and KY 1099 in Hickman.
During the course of the traffic stop and subsequent to a search of Cathey’s vehicle, KSP troopers were alerted to a possible hazardous device, the KSP reported.
Upon the arrival of the Paducah (Ky.) City Bomb Squad, KSP Special Operations hazardous device investigator and canine unit and agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, it was determined the device was non-hazardous.
As a precaution, though, the KSP had the intersection of KY 1099 and KY 94 shut down for about eight hours. Local residents in the immediate area were also evacuated.
Kentucky Area 1 Emergency Manager Lori King, Fulton County Emergency Management, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department, Hickman Fire Department, Hickman Police Department, Paducah City Bomb Squad and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms all assisted the KSP at the scene.
The incident remains under investigation by the KSP and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Additional charges are pending against Cathey, according to the KSP.
