Dyersburg State Community College’s Theatre Department has announced the cast and crew for its upcoming production of the award-winning drama, “Doubt, a Parable,” by John Patrick Shanley.
Chosen as cast members are Lori Norris as Sister Aloysius, Jennifer Cruz as Sister James, Corey Sawyers as Father Flynn and Dorthey Henderson as Mrs. Muller. Crew members are stage manager Sybil Stoots, light operator Kenneth Sandlin and sound operator Corey Mealer.
The play, set at a Catholic school in the Bronx in 1964, concerns a senior nun, Sister Aloysius, who disapproves of teachers offering friendship and compassion over discipline. When she suspects a new priest of sexual impropriety with a student, she is faced with potentially charging him with unproven accusations and possibly destroying his career as well as her own. To help substantiate her case, she asks for help from an idealistic young nun, who finds her faith in compassion challenged. The mother of the accused boy, who is protective of her son, the first black student ever admitted to St. Nicholas, is reluctant to aid Sister Aloysius in her suspicions. The play sheds light on the problems associated with rumor and suspicion and the doubt resulting from our reaction to such.
The play, which won the 2005 Tony Award for Best New Play and the 2005 Pulitzer Prize in Drama, will be presented Nov. 6-8 in the First Citizens National Bank Auditorium in the Campus Activities Building on the Dyersburg campus.
Tickets may be purchased at the door.
