The Greenfield Yellowjackets have seen all they want of McKenzie Rebel receiver and defensive back Richie Clark.
Haul it in — Greenfield’s Daniel Ricketts, here catching a pass against Gleason, caught nine tosses for 102 yards against McKenzie.
The 5-8, 149-pound sophomore accounted for an offensive and a defensive score in the game’s first 16 minutes to key the host Rebels to a 41-0 Region 7-A victory on Friday night at McKenzie.
Clark had an interception return for a touchdown and also caught a 44-yard scoring strike in his team’s win.
After the teams swapped punts to open the game, Greenfield was moving upfield, earning a first down on a Ty Smithson 15-yard pass to Daniel Ricketts which advanced the Jackets out to their own 39.
Smithson’s next pass was picked off by Clark who raced 47 yards to paydirt to give McKenzie a lead. Harris Laughrey’s point after kick gave the Rebels a 7-0 lead with 5:02 to play in the first quarter.
After another Jacket punt, McKenzie overcame its own penalties by mixing the run and the pass. The six-play, 43-yard possession ended with Jacob Fussell rushing 9 yards for the score. Laughrey’s kick doubled the lead to 14-0 with 39 ticks left in the first quarter.
Ricketts caught another pass good for 23 yards on the next Jacket march. In the game, the senior receiver hauled in nine passes covering 102 yards, but a bobbled snap and a sack forced a Yellowjacket punt.
On the next MHS offensive play, Reb quarterback Austin McKinney hit Clark for a 44-yard touchdown strike with 8:52 to play in the half. A bad snap kept McKenzie from converting the point after and kept the Rebel lead at 20-0.
Greenfield used a completion to Steven Johnson and a run by Tyler Dunning to pick up a first down, but Smithson’s pass downfield was picked off by Max Arnold. Arnold intercepted a pair of passes on the night.
The Jacket defense stiffened and forced a punt, but McKenzie returned the favor, allowing Greenfield one first down on a Dunning run before bringing the special teams unit out to punt.
Working their two-minute drill, the Rebels mainly used the pass to cover 69 yards in five plays. Arnold caught a short McKinney pass good for 10 yards and a score with 57 seconds left in the half. Laughrey split the uprights for a 27-0 halftime lead.
McKenzie took the third quarter kickoff and drove 65 yards in eight plays. A 53-yard completion to John Johnson was the big play and helped set up Quinton Bowden’s 4-yard touchdown run. Laughrey nailed the kick for a 34-0 lead with 8 minutes left in the third.
The Yellowjackets had their next possession end with an interception.
McKenzie took advantage of the GHS turnover, eventually scoring on a Bowden 2-yard run with 38 seconds to play in the third quarter. Laughrey again booted the PAT for the game’s final points in the 42-0 McKenzie victory.
The win improves the Rebels to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in Region 7-A action. Greenfield falls to 3-4 on the season and 2-2 against regional opponents.
The Jackets will face another tough opponent on Friday when they visit the Union City Tornadoes. McKenzie will host the winless West Carroll War Eagles. Both games will kick off at 7:30 on Friday night.
