Skyhawk RB Young
earns top OVC honor

UT Martin running back Brandyn Young was named the Ohio Valley Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week for his effort against Eastern Illinois.
Young, 5-8, 205-pound junior, from Stone Mountain, Ga., carried the ball 28 times for 213 yards (163 of which came in the second half) and four touchdowns in UT Martin’s 29-26 home victory over Eastern Illinois last Thursday night.
During the game, Young also had a reception for nine yards and he finished the game with 222 all-purpose yards.
His 213 yards rushing marked the ninth time in UTM history that a player had carried the ball for more than 200 yards in a game.
Meanwhile, Murray State’s Nathan Williams recorded 19 tackles (nine solo) and a sack in Murray State’s 51-21 home victory over Tennessee Tech on Saturday to earn the OVC’s top defensive honor, while Eastern Illinois’ Quentin Ponius earned the best specialist award for the week and Eastern Kentucky’s Shannon Davis grabbed the league’s newcomer fo the week nod.

Tickets now on sale
for LR sports banquet

Tickets are now on sale for the 2008 Lake Road Athletic Banquet.
The event — which will honor the school’s junior softball team, football squad and cheerleaders — is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 23 in the LR cafeteria.
Admission to the banquet is $6 and tickets can be purchased at the school.

UT hoops freshman
out for knee surgery

KNOXVILLE (AP) — Cameron Tatum, a redshirt freshman at Tennessee, is out for 3-4 weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery to his right knee.
Tatum, who had surgery Friday, played in seven games last season before redshirting.
He averaged five points and two rebounds prior to being redshirted.
