Norris Army & Air Force Army National Guard Sgt. Maj. Paula S. Norris has graduated from the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy Nonresident Course at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas. The two-year program parallels the academy’s resident course and is the primary method for students to complete the sergeants major course via the Web site on the Internet, or through correspondence. Correspondence includes six instructional modules consisting of 53 lessons with an exam at the end of each module to evaluate the student’s knowledge of the material learned. The curriculum focuses on leadership, resource management, training management and military operations at the highest levels throughout the Army. Students who satisfactorily complete correspondence requirements are eligible to attend the 14-day resident course at the academy to complete further training to qualify as official graduates of the sergeants major course. During these two weeks, the students are evaluated on ability, aptitude, total Soldier concept, performance and potential for positions of greater responsibility. The graduates take all the knowledge they have gained during all their training and apply the learned material to their assigned units and communities. Norris, a senior supply supervisor with 25 years of military service, is assigned to the 194th Engineer Brigade, Jackson. Sgt. Maj. Norris’ mother, Robbie J. Elliott, lives in Sharon. The sergeant major graduated in 1972 from Obion County Central High School, Troy, and received a bachelor’s degree in the year 2000 from Bethel College, McKenzie. wcp 10-7-08
