DFUMC holds 175th birthday celebration

PREPARING FOR CELEBRATION — Dresden First United Methodist Church’s pastor, the Rev. Dan Leslie, prepares to welcome members and guests to the church’s 175th birthday celebration on Oct. 12. He is joined by chair of the celebration, Jane Tucker, and
The consecration of the new building will highlight Dresden First United Methodist Church’s three-day event Oct. 12, 13, 14. The 60-feet by 100-feet steel-framed building houses a fellowship hall, kitchen and church offices. The facility also provides handicapped accessible restrooms, covered entryway and an elevator to all three floors of the older church building. The new building enables the church to more effectively carry out its mission: To glorify God through worship, service, education and fellowship, offering Christ’s love to all people. Allen Searcy Builders, Union City, is the construction company. The building is being funded through contributions to the church’s capital campaign, Growth for Grace and Glory. Festivities will begin at 10:30 Sunday morning in the sanctuary. Special speaker for the celebratory service will be the Rev. Harold Phillips, former pastor and former district superintendent. Events will move to the new Fellowship Hall following that service for the consecration ceremony, which is followed by a covered dish lunch. The church is providing the meat and bread; church members are providing vegetables and desserts. At 2 p.m. on Sunday, a musical program in the sanctuary will feature former and present church members who are accomplished musicians. Celebratory services will be held on Monday and Tuesday evenings, beginning at 7 in the sanctuary. District Superintendent Stan Waldron will speak on Monday, and former pastor Glenn Hill will speak on Tuesday. wcp 10-9-08
