Win gives Jr. Bulldogs Reelfoot championship
The Gleason Junior High Bulldogs built a quick lead and cruised to not only a victory but the 2008 Reelfoot Conference championship with a 36-22 win over the host Greenfield Junior Yellowjackets Thursday night.
The Junior Dawgs took control on the opening drive with a score for a lead they never relinquished. The 66-yard march was capped by a 9-yard touchdown run by Will Clark. Austin Perry ran in the two-pointer for an 8-0 lead with 3:11 left in the frame.
Blake Taylor punched in Gleason’s second score with a 1-yard run for a 14-0 edge with three minutes left in the half.
Before the intermission arrived, the Yellowjackets fought back. Greenfield needed eight plays to cover the 53 yards. Quinton Yarbrough covered the final 5 yards to paydirt to cut Gleason’s lead down to 14-6 at the break.
The Dawgs wasted little time in the third quarter in extending their lead back to two scores. Taylor crossed the goal line for the second time in the game rushing in from 7 yards out. Clark ran in the two-pointer for a 22-6 Gleason advantage.
Yarbrough’s 37-yard scamper paved the way for Austin Pence’s 9-yard TD run. Pence added the two-point try to whittle the Gleason lead to 22-14.
Taylor’s third TD bumped the Dawgs’ lead to 30-14 before the Gleason special teams unit recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. On the first snap, Perry raced 44 yards to the end zone for a 36-14 lead.
The Jackets never quit as Pence hit Yarbrough for a 21-yard scoring toss. Pence’s two-point run ended the scoring.
