30 Years Ago
Oct. 11 — Marion Hazlewood and Dick Davies combined to win first place in the mixed doubles portion of the E.W. James/Obion County Tennis Invitational. Tami Denaburg and Mike Gilliam teamed to earn second, while the duo of Margie Smith and Bill James was third. Fourth place went to the team of Mary Critchlow and Paul Russell.
Oct. 13 — Fulton City drubbed Dresden 33-13 on the high school gridiron. The Bulldogs were led by Anthony Parker, who was playing with a hip pointer. Parker totaled 178 rushing yards on 21 carries and he ran for his team’s first three touchdowns during the Reelfoot Conference matchup.Mack Workman capped the scoring for Fulton City with a 66-yard scamper.

Oct. 10 — Oops. That could’ve been what the clock operators at Halls said after South Fulton’s 14-9 victory over the Tigers. During the second quarter, seven minutes seemingly disappeared as the clock was left wide open much to the disdain of the host team. The Devils won the shortened battle when Langston Rose took a fumble the distance on a 100-yard recovery. Otherwise, Tab Vowell dove in from a yard out for South Fulton’s other touchdown.
Oct. 12 — Twin Cities shellacked CBK 13-2 in Men’s Softball Fall League action. The victors were paced by David Morris, who went 3-for-4 with a home run during the victory. Meanwhile, Dale Yates and Troy Livingston each reached safely twice for the winners.

Oct. 9 — The winners were made known from the 5th annual Fall Fest Four Race in the 7-9-year-old age group. Finishing first in the girls’ division was Andrea Beach, while Elizabeth Beach was second and Jana Roney third. On the boys’ side, Ben Hopkins took the top prize, with Colton Speed second and Camron Sherwood third.
Oct. 12 — Union City shut out Martin 13-0 on the high school gridiron. The victorious Twisters did not allow the Chargers to get closer than the locals’ 37 over the course of the triumph. Scoring-wise, Ben Glasgow booted a pair of field goals for UC with one sailing 33 yards and the other going 27. The only TD of the outing came when Chris Smith dove in from a yard out. Defensively, Vincent Hess was in on 10 tackles and a sack.

Oct. 13 — South Fulton totaled 418 yards on offense while holding Lake County to a lowly 66 during a 34-0 victory. Michael Alford sprinted to the endzone on runs of 50 and 36 yards as he totaled 149 rushing yards on 14 hand-offs.
Oct. 14 — The Union City High School boys’ golf team finished second in the Region 7A-AA Tournament after posting a victory in the District 13A-AA Tournament. Members of the team were Blake Gregg, Bradley Bugg, Thomas Elam, Mack Moore, Ryan Chandler, Wade Maness, Ryan Guy, Nathan Woods and Dustin Ray.

Oct. 12 — The Obion Central girls’ cross country team earned third place behind Jackson Christian and Trinity Christian at a run it hosted. The Lady Rebels were led by Mandi McDaniel, who placed 10th overall during the event. Meanwhile, Autumn Yates, Katherine Parker, Hope Montgomery and Chelsea Hogg all contributed to the scoring for the county locals.
