Railroad enthusiasts to gather in Union City for swap meet

The Railroadiana Swap Meet will kick off Saturday’s Union City Railfest 2008 at the Hampton Centré at 2201 West Reelfoot Ave. in Union City.
Darren Doss of Union City, an engineer for Canadian National Railroad and the local organizer of the train meet, is excited about the activities planned.
The collector-pleasing swap meet, with dealer set-up at 6 a.m., will be held all day, with a “happy hour” from 6-7 p.m. and a banquet beginning at 7.
Admission to the swap meet is $3 for adults and teens and $2 for children younger than 12 years old.
Memorabilia, books, slides, photos, model railroad supplies and the ever-popular GM&O-related model contest will be part of the event from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Hampton Centré.
Those attending are encouraged to bring their own latest creations to show off, Doss says.
The fun is sponsored by the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Historical Society and this will be the group’s 36th annual fall meet.
Those arriving from across state lines or elsewhere in the Volunteer State are encouraged to take notice of railroad-related interests in South Fulton at the Twin Cities Railroad Museum and in downtown Union City at the Chamber of Commerce site, where there is a former GM&O caboose 2618 on display outside the restored GM&O/NC&StL depot.
The banquet will feature a delicious menu, with tickets going for $30 (tax and gratuity included) for children from 12 years old through adults. Younger children will eat free.
Union City lies at the midpoint of the north-south line of interest in the event which has taken place annually since 1972 and was, therefore, a logical choice for this year’s session, Doss says. The city’s own debt of gratitude for its railroad heritage will, no doubt, be the subject of discussion at the week-end event, which will actually begin as railroad enthusiasts chug into town and meet to view slides and videos at the pre-social Friday night.

Local railroading fans are invited to attend, Doss said.
