Mary Sue (Summers) Blackley, 70, of Obion died Oct. 4, 2008, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Obion Church of Christ, with burial following in Obion in Rosehill Cemetery. Rick Knoll will officiate and pallbearers will be Tommy Morris, Vinson Thompson, Wes Walton, Tony Bullion, J.C. Coleman and Jim West. Honorary pallbearers will be Sammy Snead and Glen Parnell.
Friends may call at Cryer Funeral Home in Obion 6-8 this evening.
The family requests that memorials be made to West Tennessee Children’s Home, 170 Frank Lathem Road, Pinson, TN 38366, to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
She was born Oct. 5, 1937, in Martin, daughter of the late F.R. “Sam” and Golden Clarice Summers. She married Billy Wilson Blackley Dec. 2, 1953. He died in 2007.
She earned her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in education from the University of Tennessee at Martin and taught first grade for 30 years, beginning in Obion and retiring from Hillcrest Elementary School in Troy in 2006. She was a longtime member of Obion Church of Christ and of Daughters of the American Revolution and Delta Kappa Gamma.
She had traveled extensively, including all 50 states and 20 foreign countries.
Survivors include two sons, James Stephen Blackley and Daryl Wilson Blackley, both of Obion; her mother-in-law, Mary (Eaton) Blackley of Obion; four grandchildren, Daphne York of Martin, Stephanie Garrett of Dyersburg, Rebekah Carman of Union City and Michael Blackley of Jacksonville, N.C.; four great-grandchildren; and her sister, Martha Maynard of Lansing, Mich.
