NASHVILLE (AP) — A state audit criticizes Tennessee State University for handing out too many credit cards for school purchases, sloppy bookkeeping and putting student information at risk for fraud.
The findings, released Thursday, come after a consultant’s report found that student enrollment and financial aid offices are ineffective. Last month, a student walked away with a financial aid office flash drive containing 9,000 students’ Social Security numbers and other personal information. He returned it shortly afterward.
Overall, the Treasury Department audit called for more adequate controls and safety measures.
And although, the 62-page audit criticized the university for its practices, it concluded none of them resulted in a significant problem.
