Dorothy “Dot” S. Smith, 77, of South Fulton, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Services were held 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Hornbeak Funeral Chapel in Fulton, Ky., with Dr. Jack Acree officiating. Burial was in Obion County Memorial Gardens in Union City. Mrs. Smith was born Dec. 21, 1930, in Gleason, daughter of the late Jack A. and Audie M. Sullivan Bowers. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Fulton, Ky., an elementary school teacher in the Obion County School system, retiring in 1991 after teaching at South Fulton Elementary School. She also taught for three years at the former Welch School at Dukedom and five years at Martin Elementary School in Martin. She had been recognized as Distinguished Classroom Teacher of the Year and was a member of the Obion County Retired Teachers Association and the Tennessee Education Association. Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Ralph M. Smith of South Fulton; one sister, Brenda Sosebee of Pine Mountain, Ga; and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Richard Bowers, William Arthur Bowers and Nicky Bowers.
