Weakley County AARP Chapter No. 3392 met Wednesday, Aug. 20, in the fellowship hall of the First United Methodist Church in Martin. Activities began at 9:30 a.m. with a time of fellowship and refreshments. Hostesses were Mrs. Myrtie Wilson and Mrs. Jerry Seamans. Chapter President Gladys Simmons called the meeting to order at 10 a.m. and read an interesting article titled “Teenage Commandments. After prayer requests were voiced, Don Ellison led in prayer. We said the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. flag. The minutes of the July meeting were read, and the financial report was given. Several members made donations to WLJT-TV, which Treasurer Jerry Seamans delivered afterward. President Simmons appointed Marshall Hazelwood, Mrs. Dorothy Coleman and Mrs. Gladys Hailey as the nominating committee for chapter officers for 2009. Woodrow Collier presented Mrs. Donna Winstead, registrar of deeds for Weakley County, who explained what that office does and the importance of recording deeds. Mrs. Winstead encouraged us to be happy, count our blessings and make new friends. Then she introduced her new friend, Mrs. Heidi Fletcher, who is a physical therapist at Healthsouth Cane Creek and also the wife of Dr. Walter Fletcher. Mrs. Fletcher talked about therapy offered at Cane Creek, including outpatient therapy. She gave good suggestions about staying healthy and keeping active and demonstrated some simple exercises to do at home. The regional AARP meeting is scheduled for Sept. 11 in Huntingdon. Our next chapter meeting is Sept. 17 at the First United Methodist Church in Martin. Refreshments will be served at 9:30 a.m., and the meeting will be at 10. Mrs. Gladys Hailey and Mrs. Dorothy Coleman volunteered to be hostesses.wcp 9-18-08
