UC girls earn 1st-ever region bid
The Union City High School girls’ golf team qualified for the regional tournament for the first time ever with a third-place finish in the District 14A-AA Tournament at The Farms in Dyersburg on Monday.
The Tornado tandem of Katie Potter and Allison Bruff combined to shoot 211, behind tourney winner Milan (179) and second-place Dyersburg (183), to punch their region ticket.
The top three teams and next five best individual scores automatically qualify for the Region 7 A-AA Tournament at the same Farms course next Monday.
Potter’s 90 was the third-best score of anyone in the field in Monday’s district competition. The UCHS senior also was named to the all-district team.
Bruff, a junior competing in her first season of links play, finished with a 121.
“That’s a pretty significant thing for our girls to qualify for the regional tournament,” Union City coach Jeff Chandler said. “Katie really played well, and Allison has made improvement throughout her first season.
South Fulton’s Maeghan Eaves also qualified for the regional, shooting a 115. Eaves, a senior, was the lone representative from the Devilettes to participate in the district event that had a five-team field.
Alyson Agee of Dyersburg was the tourney medalist with a 79, and Milan’s Leah Watson shot 88.
The District 14A-AA boys’ tournament is being played today at The Farms with the top team and individual qualifiers to advance to regional play next week.
