For the second time in as many years, a tragic automobile accident has taken the life of a Trenton Peabody High School senior, marring the beginning of a new school year. Peabody High School senior and Tide football player Matthew S. Morris, 17, of Trenton died early Saturday morning from injuries sustained in a one-vehicle accident. According to a report provided by both Tennessee Highway Patrol Sgt. Don DeSpain and the Tennessee Department of Safety, the one-vehicle accident occurred about 2:35 a.m. on Sammons Road. DeSpain said Morris was driving a 2000 Chevrolet pickup, traveling north on Sammons Road, about two miles east of Trenton, when the vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway. The driver apparently overcorrected and the vehicle began to slide, ran off the roadway again and rolled into a tree. No seat belt was being used and it is not known at this time whether alcohol was involved, according to DeSpain. The accident, first reported as a crash without injuries, was investigated by THP Trooper Baron Cooper. It is still under investigation. Morris was transported by a Gibson County ambulance to Gibson General Hospital in Trenton, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. “We are all saddened by the loss of our teammate, Matt Morris, and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. We hope the entire community keeps our football family in its thoughts and prayers, and we have lost a family member,” Trenton coach Kent Scott said. Last year, Peabody High School senior band member Erika Kirk died in an auto accident just one day before school was to start. Published in The Messenger 8.25.08
