From the American Dietetic Association MyPyramid for kids tells us that children need to eat foods from all the food groups — grains, vegetables, fruit, milk, and meat and bean — plus healthy oils, every day. Encourage kids to eat colorful fruits and vegetables with meals or snacks. Be sure they get three servings a day of low-fat or fat-free milk, yogurt or cheese. Serve lean meats, poultry and fish. Visit MyPyramid.gov for an individual MyPyramid Plan for yourself and your kids. GetFitTN is a statewide awareness program developed by Governor Phil Bredesen to address the rising epidemic of Type 2 diabetes and risk factors 3 that lead to diabetes, like obesity. This initiative is aimed at educating both adults and children that Type 2 diabetes can be delayed or even prevented with modest lifestyle changes like increasing physical activity and a healthier diet.
