wcp Col. Alva W. Pendergrass Jr., 81, of Martin, died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in Jackson. Services were held 10 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bill Tate officiating. Burial was in Martin Memorial Gardens. Murphy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Col. Pendergrass was born May 10, 1927, in Elberton, Ga., son of the late Alva W. Sr. and Cora Lee Conway Pendergrass. He was retired from the U.S. Army following 30 years of service. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia, received a master’s degree from Boston University, was a professor of military science at the University of Tennessee at Martin, a member of Martin Rotary Club, Martin Tree Board organizer and past president, member of Martin City Beautiful, American Legion, University Post No. 69 adjutant and past post commander, 32nd degree Mason, Martin City Lodge No. 551 and 50-year member, a member of Tennessee Urban Forestry Association and a member of First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Carmen Tilghman Pendergrass of Martin; six sons, Capt. Russell Pendergrass of Singapore; Alva W. Pendergrass III of Fresno, Calif., Hugh Pendergrass of Peachtree City, Ga., Mark Pendergrass of Dayton, Ohio, and Alan Penn of Kenton; one daughter, Renee Childs of Kenton; 23 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
