30 Years Ago
Aug. 7 — Rives’ E.W. James and Sons won both the regular season and postseason crown in the Obion County Girls’ Softball League. Team members were Kathy Isbell, Pam Ursery, Melissa Gibson, Cherri Thompson, Karen Porphis, Connie Ferrell, Cheryll Dickson, Debbie White, May Ferrell and Tammy Lyle.
Aug. 9 — 7-Up represented the Ken-Tenn Softball League well in the ASA District Tournament. The local squad bettered Dyersburg 10-1 in the event. During the victory, Brent Welch was a perfect 3-for-3 with two singles and a double while Jerry Rauchle was good for a three-run homer. Doug Cunningham was the winner pitcher for the Bottlers.
20 Years Ago
Aug. 8 — Tim Williams blasted two home runs to lead Mount Ararat over South Fulton United Methodist 15-5 in Union City Co-ed Softball League play. MA was also helped the victory by David Lee and Diane Traverse, who both doubled during the triumph. For SF, David Forrester smacked a double.
Aug. 9 — For the second time in his golfing career, local golfer Buddy Wirt sank a hole-in-one. Wirt’s second ace came on the par-3, 139-yard second hole at Goodyear Wingfoot Golf Course. Witnessing the shot were Dan Willey, Pete Caldwell and J.C. (Pip) Little.

Aug. 7 — Craddock and Roach Paving finished as the runner-up in both the regular season and postseason tournament of the Obion County Girls’ Softball Coach Pitch League. Members of the team were Amanda Goodman, Megan Beasley, Mallory Bruce, Amber Roberts, Kaleena Davis, Heather Morton, Tori Bone, Rachel Roberson, Cara Eason and Hannah Keeling.
Aug. 13 — Winners were announced from the Kings and Queens Couples Tournament at Wynridge Greens in Troy. Gerald and Jodi Hill shot a 5-under, 31 to take the top honor, with the duo of Terry Wiseman and Norma Kissell in second. In third place was the duo of Lynn Jenkins and Betty Jane Lofton.

Aug. 11 — Union City dominated Bruceton 4-0 in a preseason football scrimmage. The Tornadoes’ first score of the afternoon came when quarterback Andrew Regen found Seth Prather for a 33-yard touchdown toss. Kenneth Fouse sprinted 80 yards for the team’s second score of the game. Regen then connected with Paul Huff for the third score of the scrimmage. The final Union City touchdown came when Adam Reeves bounced in from five yards out.
Aug. 13 — Four were to be inducted into the Union City High School Hall of Honors. 2003 UCHS graduates and twin brothers, Ty and Clay Goodrich, both Tennessee Sports Writers’ Association All-Staters, led the class of inductees. Meanwhile, recently retired UC football coach Randy Barnes and 1953 graduate Jere Baldridge both were included in the class. Barnes posted a 191-58 record during his tenure as the Twisters’ head football coach.

Aug. 9 — Sid Chappell, Jim Baker, Brian Barker and Tiger Haag combined to shoot 9-under-par and win the men’s weekly scramble at Poplar Meadows Country Club. Finishing a shot off the pace and in second was the team of Bart White, Hunter Kirkland, Greg Grissom, Will Wade and Herman Jenkins.
Aug. 13 — Obion Central’s golf team bettered Halls by 13 strokes in a high school links match. The Rebels finished with a cumulative score of 192, while Halls compiled a tally of 205 strokes. Leading the way for OC was medalist Ethan Rudd, who shot a 45 while Corey Gibson and Clay Craddock both offered a 48 during the victory. Chase Wallace rounded out the list of Central golfers with a 51.
