Obion County residents can now boast that they live in the best rural county in the nation. Readers of Progressive Farmer magazine have voted Obion County as “The Best Place to Live in Rural America” in the first-ever online poll presented by Tractor Supply Co., Polaris and John Deere™. The poll allowed anyone to vote for any rural county in the nation they deemed “the best.” It opened at the beginning of February and ended in June. “We rallied everybody we knew to vote,” said Kellye Albright, a rural Obion County resident featured in Progressive Farmer who sent out numerous e-mails to family, friends and business leaders in the community. The effort paid off, because Progressive Farmer has an-nounced Obion County is at the top of the list, beating out Columbia County, Pa., Boyle County, Ky., Dyer County, Alleghany County, Va., Weakley County, McLean County, Ky., Queen Anne’s County, Md., Hart County, Ga., and Ellis County, Ky. This honor comes after Ja-mie Cole, managing editor for Progressive Farmer, came to Obion County in November researching the magazine’s own list of the top 10 rural counties. His article appeared in the February edition and ranked Obion County as fourth in its “Best Place to Live in Rural America” for 2008. The article praised Obion County’s agricultural and industrial economy. Published in The Messenger 8.7.08
