A Humboldt man was critically injured and a Union City man charged with attempted murder following a shooting early today in Union City’s Nash Street area. Corderous M. Bryson, 20, of 510 McLin St., Humboldt, was critically injured in an incident that occurred about 12:15 a.m. today, according to Union City Police Department reports. Charged in connection with the incident is Charles Vonjay Liphford, 18, of 407 North Morgan St., Union City, who was arrested at 3:44 a.m. today at his home on a charge of attempted first-degree murder, police reported. The incident remains under investigation today and police are still compiling information from witnesses, but early investigation indicates Bryson was driving his car, approaching a stop sign at Nash and College streets, when gunfire struck the vehicle. The shooter apparently was on foot and fled the area on foot. Bryson sustained a gunshot wound to his face. He was treated at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City and later airlifted to the Memphis hospital. Police said there were several people in Bryson’s vehicle, including a passenger who apparently ducked to avoid the gunfire, but no one else was reported to be injured. The vehicle was also struck by gunfire. Liphford was taken to the Obion County Law Enforcement Complex, where he is being held pending arraignment Thursday. Anyone who has any information about the shooting or anything that may have occurred prior to the incident is asked to call the Union City Police Department at 885-1515 or Crime Stoppers at 885-TIPS (885-8477). Callers to Crime Stoppers are guaranteed anonymity and could earn cash rewards for tips that solve cases. Published in The Messenger 8.6.08
