KNOXVILLE (AP) — State transportation officials have scrapped plans to make the proposed Knoxville Parkway a toll road. Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely acknowledged this spring that toll roads would be a tough sell in the state, which has not had them since the 1920s. Nicely wrote a letter to Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam in which he stated he decided against imposing tolls on the planned road. He said citizen and local government opposition to tolls was substantial. The Knox and Anderson county commissions both passed unanimous resolutions against the plan. The parkway would connect Interstate 75 north of Knoxville with Interstate 40/75 west of the city.
