|New South Fulton High School head football coach Kelly Spivey gave his team a satisfactory rating after Friday’s first scrimmage of the preseason. |
The Red Devils outscored Perry County 2-1, but they were on the short end, 1-0, to host Waverly in a three-way scrimmage Friday afternoon.
“I’m extremely pleased and impressed with our offense,” Spivey said. “We stopped ourselves more offensively than the other two teams did by fumbling on option attempts and throwing a pair of interceptions.”
In the portion of the scrimmage against Perry County, Skylar Cherry bounced in from one-yard away after he had carried the ball 15 yards a play earlier for his team’s first score of the afternoon with Jonathan Avent able to sprint 70 yards on an outside toss for his team’s second touchdown.
“I was really impressed with our running game in general and I thought Avent really showed out at the scrimmage,” Spivey said on Saturday.
That said, the first-year SF skipper did have some points of concern following his first look at his team with the pads on against an opponent.
“We didn’t tackle very well and, defensively, we had some busted coverage in the secondary that allowed Waverly’s only score.
“Still, we hit well and I think this is a good, positive start for our team.”
Aside from Avent and Cherry, Spivey pegged linemen Sam Curtis and Hunter Allen for a great day offensively.
First-year quarterback Corbin Hawks was also complimented by Spivey for his management of the offense.
Hawks switched to the position in the spring after then-quarterback Hunter Harris transferred to Covington.
Otherwise, Tyler Nolen was lauded for his defensive work, while newcomer Drew Greer was credited with having a good scrimmage.
South Fulton is now looking for a second scrimmage this week after Houston County pulled out of Friday’s scheduled workout.
The Red Devils will participate in the annual Ken-Tenn Jamboree on Aug. 15 at Fulton City High School before opening the regular season with a Week 0 home date the following Friday against Region 7-1A foe West Carroll.
