All veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom are being offered free vacations. Chuck Ashley, Obion County Veterans Service Officer, made the announcement Thursday. “We received this notification from our headquarters office,” Ashley said. Outward Bound, an international nonprofit outdoor education program is offering fully-funded outdoor adventure excursions to all Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans. “It doesn’t matter what your current military status is — active, inactive, discharged, retired — you’re eligible to attend as long as you deployed in support of these two operations while in the military service,” said Ashley. The five-day excursions offer activities such as backpacking, rock climbing, canoeing and dog sledding in beautiful wilderness areas in Maine, Texas, Colorado, California and Minnesota. The excursions are offered at no cost to participants. Costs for lodging, equipment, food and instruction are funded by a multi-million dollar Sierra Club grant, including round-trip transportation between home and the wilderness site. To sign up, contact Doug Hayward at 1-866-669-2362, ext. 8387. Vacation spots and dates include: • Leadville, Colo. Backpacking and rock climbing. Sept. 3-7 and Oct. 4-8. • Newry, Maine. Backpacking and camping. Oct. 7-11 and Oct. 19-23. • Big Bend, Texas. Backpacking and canyoneering. Nov. 2-6 and Nov. 15-19. • Joshua Tree National Monument, Calif. Backpacking and rock climbing.
