Martin to host Cal Ripken Tournament

Martin to host Cal Ripken Tournament
In just one week, the City of Martin will play host to a sports event bringing in 10 teams from all over the country with the common goal of taking home a trophy. On Aug. 7-14, the Martin Parks and Recreation Complex will feature Cal Ripken World Series games. “The tournament will bring in a lot of people to the area from all over the country,” Martin Mayor Randy Brundige remarked. “It will be very good for the economy.” The city has previously hosted two southeast regional tournaments in 2002 and 2006, but it will be the first time the city has hosted an event of the magnitude of the World Series. “We bid on it,” Martin Parks and Recreation interim co-director Brian Moore explained. “They came in and evaluated the facility and the area to see if we were capable of hosting the event.” In passing the test, the city will now host ten teams, including the host Martin squad, made up of the Tennessee state champion plus eight region champions. Currently, Hamburg, Ark will represent the southwest region; South Daytona Fla will represent the southeast region; Arlington, Mass will represent the New England region; Kennewick, Calif will represent the pacific northwest region and Lake County will represent Tennessee at the state champion. Four regions — Middle Atlantic, Midwest Plains, Ohio Valley and Pacific Southwest — have yet to confirm but are expected to do so soon. On Aug. 7-11, the 10 teams will compete in pool play with four games scheduled per day. The championship starts on Tuesday, Aug. 12 and the title game will be played at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14. Before the series begins, there will be a Banquet of Champions to kick off the event at 6:30 p.m on Wednesday, Aug. 6 at the University of Tennessee at Martin’s Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. The guest speaker will be former New York Yankees second baseman Bobby Richardson. Tickets are $20 each and came be purchased at Martin Parks and Recreation on Lindell Street. World Series tickets can also be purchased at Martin Parks and Recreation and from members of Martin’s Cal Ripken baseball league. Family passes are $50, adult passes are $25 and children ages 5-12 are $10. Day passes are $5 each and the passes are good for all games throughout the tournament.
