The Messenger. 07.30.08 Four children’s events planned as part of the Union City Police Department’s National Night Out anti-crime festivities next Tuesday have been rescheduled and are now being held in conjunction with the local Boys & Girls Club’s “Back to School Bash” Thursday at Graham Park in Union City. The children’s art contest, basketball shoot-off, Magical Mink’s air rides and a visit from the Union City Fire Department’s safety house will now be held Thursday beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing until 2 p.m. at Graham Park for the promotion of National Night Out. Trophies, medals and various prizes will be awarded in the different contests. The activities for youngsters had initially been planned as part of an annual children’s carnival. Union City police are still planning several other activities for Tuesday to mark this year’s observance of National Night Out. They include a community prayer breakfast and service at 7 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church in Union City; Kid Care Photo I.D., a child safety seat checkpoint, the National Child Identification Program (DNA and fingerprint kit), Project Child Safe (free gun locks) and tire safety checks provided by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., all from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Wal-Mart Supercenter in Union City; highway safety, drug awareness and community policing displays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Union City Municipal Building; and community block parties throughout the evening in various neighborhoods, with “McGruff” the crime prevention mascot making visits. Registration forms for holding block parties are available at the Union City Police Department or by calling 885-1515. The first 10 people to sign up for block parties will receive a National Night Out hat or T-shirt.
