30 Years Ago
July 24 — Rosalee Thompson teamed with Sacchi Doss to win the women’s doubles portion of the second annual Poplar Meadows Country Club Tennis Tournament. The winning duo edged its opposition in the tournament’s finale by a slim 9-8 margin.
July 25 — The Ken-Tenn Softball League gave out postseason awards. Old and Third’s Roger Speed was named the league’s most valuable player. Speed posted a .472 batting average with seven doubles, four triples and four home runs during the 1978 season. Meanwhile, Pepsi’s Larry Ulmer was the runner-up for the award. Ulmer compiled a 14-5 record with 93 strikeouts during the campaign. He also batted .379 on the year. Otherwise, Old and Third’s Johnny Plunket got the Sportsmanship award with Danny Cruce the runner-up for that coveted honor.

July 26 — A pair of Obion County youngsters returned after competing in the National AAU 12-and-under Basketball Tournament. Robin Cude averaged 21 points per game for the Memphis-based Berclair team while Harris posted a game-high of 18 markers during the tournament.
July 29 — Mt. Ararat edged Exchange Street Church of Christ 10-9 in Union City Coed Softball League action. Linda Jones was the winning pitcher and she was helped to the victory by Ronald Wiley’s home run and Stacy Crosser’s 2-for-2 outing. For ESCOC, David Hawks was a perfect 4-for-4.

July 24 — CPA’s eight-and-under softball team, which featured numerous locals, placed second at the ASA District Coach Pitch Tournament. Team members were Mary Steward, Chelsea Boyd, Kesha Gurien, Anna White, Marcetta Ross, Hannah Chappell, Sloane Bradberry, Tiffany Logan, Caitlin Kirkland, Stephanie Scott, Courtney House and Allison McCullough.

July 30 — Obion County’s 16-and-under travel softball team competed abroad during the summer. Members of the team were Gentry Reedy, Maddie Carrington, Mollie DuRall, Niki Calhoun, Hailey Woodward, Brooke Knipper, Jessica Jones, Abby Reedy, Emmalee Harrison, Brandy Rainey, Courtney Schindler, Addy Greer, Audrey Gilliam and Samantha Smith.

July 24 — The Obion County Little League announced its All-County performers for the 2007 seasons. Members of the glitter squad were Adam Mitchell, Ryan Tucker, Ryan Middlebrook, Jordan Davis, Camden Napper, Eric Torress, Austin Carter, Coleman Dunn, Rusty Smith, Albert Acevedo, Rad McDavid and Christian Cousar.
July 30 — A total of five UT Martin football standouts were named to the Ohio Valley Conference’s preseason team. Running back Donald Chapman led the charge for UTM on the team along with offensive linemen Billy Krause and Adam Hansen. Return specialist Jessie Burton and junior defensive lineman Nate Wilson also got the nod to the preseason team.
