Then & Now in Palmersville
Posted: Tuesday, July 22, 2008 4:22 pm wcp 7-22 Considering the hot county rivalries and packed gyms at Palmersville in years past for basketball games, it might be hard to believe that baseball was once a favorite sport also. We recently received this photo of the Palmersville baseball team from Kermit Brann, a Palmersville native now living in Tupelo, Miss. The only person identified in the picture is his father, Sebern Brann, fourth from the left on the back row. It is very likely that the young men in the photo were not students, but just a group who played together as an independent team representing the community of Palmersville. Cottage Grove was known to be one of their chief rivals. The building in the background appears to be the first Palmersville schoolhouse built in 1912 and used until the Palmersville High School was built in 1921. At that time, the old three-room, L-shaped building was moved closer to the new building and used for home ec, agriculture and perhaps other classes until it burned about 1936. We could estimate the date of the picture to be from 1912-20. If anyone has any other information about the baseball team at Palmersville or identities of those pictured, contact the Palmersville Historical Society at P.O. Box 21, Palmersville, TN 38241. The next meeting at the historical society will be at 7 p.m. Friday, July 25, at their building in downtown Palmersville. Scheduled speaker will be Pam Jones, who will present excerpts from the daily journals kept by her grandfather, Stonewall Jackson McWherter, for several decades prior to his death in 1969. We invite everyone to attend the meeting and enjoy refreshments afterward.
