The Messenger. 07.16.08 The Jackson Purchase Historical Society has set a meeting for 11 a.m. July 26 at Catfish Restaurant and Steak House at 943 Main St. in Martin. The meeting will begin with a buffet luncheon with a $6.99 price. Beverages are $1.39 and there will be a 9.75 percent tax. A 15 percent gratuity will be appreciated, a spokesman said. The meal will be followed by a brief business session and a presentation by Dr. Wintfred Smith on Reelfoot Lake, featuring a discussion of its formation, characteristics and development, illustrated with vintage photographs and documents from Lake and Obion counties. Dr. Smith is a retired professor from the University of Tennessee at Martin. Since his retirement in 2001, his research has continued, along with the development of a computerized database, including the historical materials found, and a comprehensive, thoroughly documented, Web site covering Reelfoot Lake and its watershed. He is compiling an illustrated history of Reelfoot Lake and its environs, with the support of the Lake County Historical Society and is preparing a manuscript dealing with the photographers of northwest Tennessee and southwest Kentucky. Dues for the historical society are payable as of Aug. 1.
