UC 9’s state champs
in Cal Ripken tourney

Union City’s 9-year-old Cal Ripken All Stars were crowned state tournament champions in Franklin Tuesday night and earned a trip to the Southeast Regionals just outside Washington, D.C. in the process.
The local glitter unit bested the host Franklin Generals 12-6 in the championship game to win the 16-team event. Union City won six games over a span of four days.
The UC stars will play the state champions from Alabama July 24 in the first round of the Southeast Regionals.

Early signup slated
for OC Youth Football

Early signup for the Obion County Youth Football League has been set for Saturday, July 26, at the Troy Community Center.
Youngsters in grades 1-5 are both eligible and encouraged to register from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. for play in the upcoming season.
Registration fee is $35 per-child for both the flag and tackle leagues.
League organizers said that, depending on the turnout, the possibility exists of returning to the old team format where every Obion County feeder school was represented.
Volunteers are also needed in roles of coaches and commissioners from each school.

Golfing duo extends
Goodyear tourney run

South Fulton’s Mikki McLeary and Jason Lancaster of Mayfield made it a three-peat by winning the Goodyear Couples Tournament for the third year in a row at the Wingfoot Golf Course last weekend.
McLeary and Lancaster combined to shoot a blistering 26-under par total over two days to claim the top prize in the championship flight. David and Linda Brann of SF teamed for a distance second-place finish at 17-under.
There was a log-jam atop the first flight with four teams shooting 8-under scores. Robert and Sandy Barclay of Clinton, Ted and Carolyn Darnell of Murray, Union City’s Kris and Janet Booth and Jimmy and Janice Wilson of UC all shared prize money.
In the second flight, Panitis and Loretta Cartee of Risco, Mo., came in first place, while Paducah’s Russ and Lynda Walton finished atop the third flight.

Wynridge scramble
ends in 1st place tie

A pair of teams came in at 4-under-par to tie for first place in the weekly women’s scramble at Wynridge Greens in Troy Tuesday evening.
One group consisted of Beverly Rice, Lee Ann Cheatham, Laurie Higdon, Evelyn Whitten and Caroline McGaugh, while Sheri Vaughn, Di Pilkenton, Marie Milner, Deb Forsythe and Joy Olexa made up the second.
A fivesome consisting of Shelly Stout, Theresa Harber, Teresa Scott, Lucy Johnston and Beverly Yates shot 2-under to place second
Wynridge Greens holds its weekly women’s scramble every Tuesday evening.

’Hounds’ win streak
ended at Owensboro

The Union City Greyhounds saw their six-game winning streak snapped with a 7-3 loss at Owensboro Tuesday night.
Kyle Switalski went seven innings and struck out nine, while Greyhound starting hurler Paul Schatz was charged with the loss. No other details were available due to a reported computer error.
