Walter R. Herndon, 81, Stone Mountain Ga., died Wednesday, June 25, 2008. A memorial service was held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Knoxville. Visitation will also be held from 5-7 p.m., July 4, at St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church, Stone Mountain, with a memorial service at 11 a.m., July 5, at the church. Herndon was born in 1926 in Birmingham Ala. He served in the U.S. Navy before completing a Ph.D. at Vanderbilt University. Early in his career, he taught at Middle Tennessee State University and the University of Alabama. Starting as professor and head of the botany department of the University of Tennessee – Knoxville in 1961, he served in college and university administrative roles until 1984, when he resumed teaching in the botany department until 1994. He is survived by his wife, Faye Borthick; four children, Martha Herndon of Martin, Stephen (Beth) Herndon of Jupiter, Fla., Susan Herndon and Thomas (Lora) Herndon, both of Knoxville; and siblings Buford Herndon and Eleanor Herndon, both of Birmingham Ala. The family requests memorials be made to the Walter R. Herndon Botanical Garden Endowment or the H. R. DeSelm Botany and Plant Ecology Endowment, payable to the University of Tennessee, (mail to Development Office, College of Arts and Sciences, 2524 Dunford Hall, University of Tennessee, Knoxville TN 37996-4000.)
