Commission honors officers
In the last meeting before the new fiscal year, the Weakley County Commission chose to lead off its agenda by putting the recognition of a few brave community members ahead of budget talk. On May 23, Trooper Andy Forsythe, Weakley County Sheriff’s Department officer Gary Eddings and Travis Atnip were the first people to arrive on the scene of a high-speed, head-on collision on Paris Hwy. 54 just west of Como. Before the arrival of emergency services, the three men, risking serious injury to themselves, pulled six people from a burning van, saving their lives in the process. The accident required the dispatching of two Weakley County EMS units, two Henry County EMS units, two Air-Evac helicopters, one life-flight helicopter, the Weakley County Rescue Squad and first responders, the Como-Ore Springs Fire Department, the Palmersville Fire Department, the Weakley County and Henry County Sheriff’s Departments, the Tennessee Highway Patrol and Henry County Rescue. Of the seven patients, three were transported to Vanderbilt Hospital and all seven are on the road to recovery from their injuries. The commission passed Resolution 2008-56 to honor the service and courage of Forsythe, Eddings and Atnip. In confirmations, Commiss-ioner Earl Wright of District 6 nominated Dale Overton to fill the seat of the late Don Malone. Additionally, Commissioner Jimmy Westbrook appointed Overton to serve on the Public Safety Board. Additional appointments included the re-appointment of John Bucy to the Weakley County Emergency Communications Board with term expiring June 30, 2012, the re-appointment of Bob Dudley to the Weakley County Emergency Communications Board with term expiring June 30, 2012, the appointment of Shawn Francisco to fill the expired term of Kim Higgs on the Weakley County Emergency Communications Board with term expiring June 30, 2012, the re-appointment of Jack Vincent to serve on the Weakley County Health, & Safety Standards Board with term expiring June 2012 and the re-appointment of Joe Porter to serve on the Weakley County Board of Public Utilities with term expiring June 2012. In new business, the commission first addressed the passing of Resolution 2008-45, the resolution to adopt the tentative 2008-2009 Fiscal Year budget. “It will continue basically like last year’s budget,” Chairman Dick Phebus remarked. Budget amendments to various funds were considered and passed as one item and included: • Resolution 2008-46 authorizing budget amendments to the Federal Projects School Fund for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2008. • Resolution 2008-49 authorizing budget amendments to the General Fund for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2008. • Resolution 2008-50 authorizing budget amendments to the Solid Waste Fund for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2008. • Resolution 2008-51 authorizing budget amendments to the Highway Fund for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2008. • Resolution 2008-52 authorizing budget amendments to the Drug Control Fund for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2008. • Resolution 2008-53 authorizing budget amendments to the Debt Service Fund for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2008. • Resolution 2008-54 authorizing budget amendments to the General Purpose School Fund for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2008. • Resolution 2008-55 authorizing budget amendments to the Child Nutrition Fund for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2008.
