The Messenger. 07.03.08 Phillip Herbert Vernon, 65, of Tiptonville died July 1, 2008, at his home. Graveside services were set for 4 p.m. today at Hickman (Ky.) City Cemetery, with the Rev. Jerry Leggett officiating. Members of the military were to serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were to be Dwayne Haggard, Jerry Simmons, Gene Lee, Nathan Strain, Jeff Alexander, Steve Jones, J.C. Williams and Tommy Bramlett. A Masonic service was set for 12:30 p.m. today. Dyersburg Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. He was born Aug. 1, 1942, in Memphis, son of the late Joseph Herbert and Cora Elizabeth (Winchester) Vernon. He was married to the former Jane Hyde, who survives, and was a retired master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. He had been employed at Northwest Correctional Center as a vocational instructor and was a member of Tiptonville First Baptist Church. He was also a member of Harmony Lodge 184, where he was past master, and was a Scottish Rite 32nd degree Mason. Survivors also include two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Sabrina Vernon of Ridgely and Jon and Elizabeth Vernon of Tiptonville; his daughter and son-in-law, Christy and Jeff Alexander of Dyersburg; and four grandchildren, Chelsea Vernon, Melanie Vernon, Jessica Alexander and Pamela Vernon.
