This Friday marks the celebration of our great country’s birth. I believe that many of us sometimes take for granted the privileges and rights we enjoy as Americans. I personally am honored to live in the United States. To commemorate our nation’s birth and to remind everyone of how fortunate we are to live here, I have written the following poem. I’m proud to be an American By Rob Somerville I’m proud to be an American; my blood runs red, white, and blue, Where we stand “United, One Nation under God” … for me and for you. One great country, that’s the land of the brave, and home of the free, Over mountains and valleys, from sea to shining sea. I’m proud to be an American; I’ll shout it out loud and clear, We will fight for our freedoms, and not shiver with fear. Firemen, policemen, soldiers, and emergency workers too, Proved you can’t kill the spirit of the red, white, and blue. Cowardly terrorists awoke us from a complacent, deep sleep, They killed brothers and sisters, and for this we still weep. But they messed up, and attacked us right in our back yard, Bin Laden found out Americans are not soft, but our strength is rock hard. I’m proud to be an American, a citizen of these United States, Where we have freedom to worship, and political debates, Where my family can walk down the street without fear, And I’ll pledge allegiance to our flag, of which I hold dear. We can never forget the infamous date of September eleven, Let us pray for the victims to our God in Heaven. And our leaders, and parents, our soldiers and our young, Let the Pledge of Allegiance roll off every tongue. I’m proud to be an American, and will be until I die, And I will salute “Old Glory” with pride when she flies. I will fight for my country, for family and friends, And will not be content until the battle for justice ends. I’m proud to be an American, and for all that we stand, I thank God each day for the privilege of living in our beloved land. So put your hand on your heart, turn to our flag and say, At the top of your voice, “God Bless the USA.” Please remember our armed service personnel, both overseas presently, as well as those that defended our rights in the past. Fly our flag with pride this weekend! Published in The Messenger 7.3.08
