NASHVILLE (AP) — Former state Sen. John Ford’s federal corruption trial was scheduled to get under way in Nashville today. Ford, a Memphis Democrat, is accused of taking $800,000 in consultant payments from TennCare contractors to promote those private companies’ interests while he held elected office. Federal prosecutors have said they expect to present evidence for about two weeks. Gov. Phil Bredesen said on Monday that he has been subpoenaed to testify on behalf of the prosecution. Ford was previously convicted of taking $55,000 in bribes during the unrelated federal Tennessee Waltz investigation and is serving a 5 1/2 year sentence. Published in The Messenger 6.24.08
