SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Will & Baumer Inc. will end 153 years of making church candles in upstate New York.
The company said Thursday it plans to close its suburban Syracuse plant in July or August 2009 and move to a new plant to be built in Lewisburg, Tenn., 57 miles south of Nashville.
Company officials say its 25 remaining employees will be given opportunities to work at the new plant. But they say many of the workers have been with Will & Baumer for 30 to 40 years and might retire instead.
The company says it’s moving south because its plant is too big for just 25 employees and operating costs in New York are too high.
Will & Baumer employed about 300 people during its heyday in the late 1950s, when it was one of the country’s biggest church-candle makers.
